Question Why do I need an architect to design my project?

Answer You might not need an architect to design your project. You might be able to do it yourself or you might hire a designer to help you. I hate to answer a question with a question, but if you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, consider hiring an architect to help.

  • Do you need a unique project that meets your unique lifestyle or function?
  • Do you have a challenging lot with varied topography?
  • Is your home larger than 4,000 SF? Some states require you to hire an architect for large homes.
  • Is your project 2-1/2 or more stories? Some states require an architect for multi-story structures.
  • Do you have a tight budget and need creative ways to save money?
  • Have you searched plan books, but can’t find a plan that’s right?
  • Do you need the whole site designed, hardscape, landscape and multiple buildings?
  • Are you trying to combine parts from multiple plans into a workable plan?
  • Are you having trouble deciding how to stack, arrange or organize spaces?
  • Is there a few things you can’t work out on your plan?
  • Do you need help with energy-efficiency systems and building practices?
  • Do you need someone to explain specifications, details and warranties?
  • Do you need someone to integrate different structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems?
  • Do you need help selecting or screening a builder?
  • Do you have good ideas, but can’t decide how to prioritize, integrate or use them?
  • Do you need advice on building envelope strategies, solar integration, water catchment solutions or smart home technologies?
  • Do you like bouncing ideas of someone and exploring creative solutions to the same problem?
  • Have you worked with an architect before, know someone who has or would you like to?
  • Are you confused about what an architect does and need help understanding it?

An architect is a problem solver and has the experience, education and creativity to help you organize your thoughts, prioritize your goals and design a unique and spectacular project that performs spiritually, environmentally and economically.
